  We are delighted to announce the next term of our Out-Spoken Academy Course, taking place over six weeks this winter, with tutors Pascale Petit, Wayne Holloway-Smith and Anthony Anaxagorou. Below you’ll find information about the course and how to apply.

What is Out-Spoken Academy?
  Our six-week long intensive poetry course offers the perfect opportunity for committed poets to work closely with award-winning tutors in a focused, supportive environment and take their poetry practice to the next stage.
  At the heart of our course is the high level of active teaching hours you’ll receive, with two-hour workshops twice a week (7–9pm UK each Monday and Friday), as well as a weekly peer-feedback workshop (7–9pm UK, Wednesdays) and weekly individual tutorials, all delivered online in the evenings. 

Workshop-based teaching and the high level of contact time means you'll receive plenty of feedback and have the opportunity to connect with your tutors and fellow students. 


  Our Tutors, Pascale Petit, Wayne Holloway-Smith and Anthony Anaxagorou have worked together to specifically tailor an integrated course syllabus to help you develop your practice from first draft to final poems. Throughout the course, the tutors will rotate each week, allowing you to benefit from their individual expertise and highly acclaimed perspectives.

Course Outline

  Duration: 6 weeks
  Dates: 5 February 2024 – 15 March 2024
  Each week will comprise:

  • two two-hour workshop sessions from 7–9pm UK each Monday and Friday,
  • a weekly peer-feedback workshop from 7–9pm each Wednesday,
  • a scheduled half hour individual tutorial on a Tuesday or Thursday. 

The programme is designed around a weekly tutor rotation. You will receive two weeks of teaching and tutorials from each tutor. 


  Workshops and tutorials will be delivered via Zoom. You will have access to a dedicated classroom space on Padlet, where you will be able to access course materials and ask any questions, and a separate Padlet board where you can share poems, feedback and discussion with other students.
  Course delivery is wholly online. We welcome applications from students anywhere in the world, but applicants should note that all teaching is provided in evenings UK time.
  This course is selective and strictly limited to twenty places.

Our Tutors
  Our tutors are renowned practising poets with over a decade of experience in teaching and mentoring:


Pascale Petit was born in Paris and lives in Cornwall. She is of French, Welsh, and Indian heritage. Her eighth collection of poetry, Tiger Girl (Bloodaxe, 2020), was shortlisted for the Forward Prize and for Wales Book of the Year. Her seventh, Mama Amazonica (Bloodaxe, 2017), won the inaugural Laurel Prize and the RSL Ondaatje Prize. Four previous collections were shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize.  Pascale was a co-founder of The Poetry School, has been Chair of the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Laurel Prize, and led popular poetry workshops at Tate Modern for nine years. Her debut novel, My Hummingbird Father, is due from Salt in 2024 and her ninth collection, Beast, from Bloodaxe in 2025.


Wayne Holloway-Smith has published two collections of poetry. The second, Love Minus Love (Blooodaxe 2020), was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize and the Ledbury Munthe Prize. He won the National Poetry Competition in 2018 and The Poetry Society's Geoffrey Dearmer Prize in 2016. He lectures at the University of Hertfordshire, teaches for The Poetry School, and is the current editor of The Poetry Review.


Anthony Anaxagorou is a British-born Cypriot poet, fiction writer, essayist, publisher and poetry educator. He has published three volumes of poetry, one collection of short stories along with a craft book entitled How To Write It. His latest poetry collection, Heritage Aesthetics (Granta, 2022), won the RSL Ondaatje Prize 2023. He is the founder and artistic director of Out-Spoken Live, a monthly poetry and music night held at London’s Southbank Centre. He’s also the publisher at Out-Spoken Press and founder of Propel Magazine.

The Academy Mini offers the time and structure for a month’s intensive focus on your poetry. The programme is designed around a weekly tutor rotation. You will receive two weeks of teaching and tutorials from each tutor.

Joelle Taylor is the author of 4 collections of poetry. Her most recent collection C+NTO & Othered Poems won the 2021 T.S Eliot Prize, and the 2022 Polari Book Prize for LGBT authors. C+NTO is currently being adapted for theatre with a view to touring. She is a co-curator and host of Out-Spoken Live at the Southbank Centre, and tours her work nationally and internationally in a diverse range of venues, from Australia to Brazil. She is also a Poetry Fellow of University of East Anglia and the curator of the Koestler Awards 2023. She has judged several poetry and literary prizes including Jerwood Fellowship, the Forward Prize, and the Ondaatje Prize. Her novel of interconnecting stories The Night Alphabet will be published by Riverrun in Spring of 2024. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and the 2022 Saboteur Spoken Word Artist of the Year. Her most recent acting role was in Blue by Derek Jarman, which was directed by Neil Bartlett and featured Russell Tovey, Jay Bernard, and Travis Alabanza. Blue sold out its run across the UK and more dates are expected for the future.

Malika Booker is an international writer whose work is steeped in anthropological research methodology and rooted in storytelling. Her writing spans poetry, theatre, monologue, installation, and education. Clients and organisations she has worked with include Arts Council England, BBC, British Council, Wellcome Trust, National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Arvon, and Hampton Court Palace.
